The Book of Job

Chapter 4

1

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered4 and said,4

2

[If] we assay14 to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved?4 but who can4 withhold2 himself from speaking?

3

Behold, thou hast instructed14 many, and thou hast strengthened17 the weak hands.

4

Thy words have upholden55 him that was falling,6 and thou hast strengthened17 the feeble6 knees.

5

But now it is come4 upon thee, and thou faintest;4 it toucheth4 thee, and thou art troubled.11

6

[Is] not [this] thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?

7

Remember,3 I pray thee, who [ever] perished,1 being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?8

8

Even as I have seen,1 they that plow6 iniquity, and sow6 wickedness, reap4 the same.

9

By the blast of God they perish,4 and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.4

10

The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.8

11

The old lion perisheth6 for lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelps are scattered abroad.101

12

Now a thing was secretly brought29 to me, and mine ear received4 a little thereof.

13

In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth2 on men,

14

Fear came1 upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.52

15

Then a spirit passed4 before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:17

16

It stood still,4 but I could not discern55 the form thereof: an image [was] before mine eyes, [there was] silence, and I heard4 a voice, [saying],

17

Shall mortal man be more just4 than God? shall a man be more pure4 than his maker?6

18

Behold, he put no trust55 in his servants; and his angels he charged4 with folly:

19

How much less [in] them that dwell6 in houses of clay, whose foundation [is] in the dust, [which] are crushed17 before the moth?

20

They are destroyed93 from morning to evening: they perish4 for ever without any regarding56 [it].

21

Doth not their excellency [which is] in them go away?8 they die,4 even without wisdom.
